An Unforgettable Opportunity
Danesha: “Wow!” That was my first reaction to being given the special opportunity and honor of sewing and reviewing the Mint Dress by BurdaStyle in their collaboration with Sprouts Patterns and Spoonflower. The Mint Dress construction is sporty yet versatile and features side metal zipper pockets and a deep V neckline, a flattering look on all body types. It’s functional enough to pair with a blazer for a professional day-time look, yet elegant enough to transform into evening wear for a night out on the town. Personally, I prefer this dress belted at the waist to accentuate my curves.
Fabric & Design
After being asked if I would like to participate in this amazing collaboration (in which my response was a resounding YES), the toughest part began. I had to choose one design out of a endless pool of over 500,000 designs—the best problem I have ever had! I decided that I needed to narrow my search and was determined to do a floral print because I had recently challenged myself to begin using floral designs (something I had been avoiding).
When it was time to choose the fabric type for my dress I was stumped at first because I am the type of person who likes to feel the material before I purchase it. Then I remembered that I owned a fabric sample pack of all the different types of fabrics that Spoonflower offers and that made my decision a whole lot easier to make. (Hint, the sample packs are only $3 and ship for free!) For my Mint Dress, I chose Organic Cotton Sateen Ultra as my fabric base and Winter Garden- Antique designed by Cecilia Mok all the way from Sydney, Australia. I love Spoonflower because it connects people all across the world and that amazes me.
Pattern & Construction
For this pattern I chose a size 38 and I didn’t need to alter it at all to get the perfect fit. Once I viewed my design choice on the 2D and 3D model of the dress, my excitement began to build even more. You are able to view your garment and even alter the placement of the design to suit your preference. This was my first experience with a Sprout Patterns and BurdaStyle project and when my order arrived, I was so impressed with the full packaging. It even included instructions on how to properly launder the fabric before cutting and sewing.
Guys…let me stop and tell you how much I LOATHE cutting out paper patterns, then having to lay it out and cut the fabric, then sew. This was the PERFECT thing for me. Cut. Sew. Voila!
New Experiences & Perks
This project did hold some firsts for me. This was my first experience putting in a neck facing and installing zipper pockets. The zipper pockets turned out to be my favorite feature on the dress and it was so much easier than I imagined. I will say that I made a mistake the first time I went to sew the pockets and I had to start over. Since this was my first time sewing a BurdaStyle Pattern, I did not realize that the seam allowance was not included on the paper pattern (pages 18 &19). I printed out the PDF pages that had the pocket piece on it so that I could trace out the opening for the zipper and, much to my dismay, I forgot to add the seam allowance. I also made the opening too wide. But, have no fear! The best part of purchasing the Mint Dress pattern is the video you will gain access to that will walk you through the process of installing the zipper pockets. Another bonus is that if you have some fabric at home that you would like to use to make this dress, you will also receive access to the printable PDF pattern!
My first experience with Sprout Patterns has definitely been an amazing experience. And now as I am now working on other projects, I have definitely been spoiled with Sprout and BurdaStyle! Being able to pre-wash, cut and get straight into sewing was wonderful. The directions were so easy to follow for this pattern.
As for the actual dress, I am a big fan and plan to make more of them. The beauty is I now own the Mint Dress PDF pattern in case I want to make it out of a fabric I already own. This dress is versatile and can be dressed up or down and that is a feature I love to have in my clothing. Thank you BurdaStyle and Sprout Patterns for teaming up and creating this spectacular dress!
